See the roof fall, hear the bells crash
As flesh and bone, turns to ash
Tried to conquer the sun, with the Christian frost
The corpses’ stench, beneath the cross

OH DEAAAAAAAAN!

Okay, now seriously. I don’t know if it’s a matter of angels not knowing the full plan for Armageddon or simple selective amnesia (at this point I’m going for selective amnesia), but from what I remember from canon, Castiel didn’t save Dean from hell because he liked him or to make him a favor, but only because the angels needed him for the whole Michael vessel business.

Angels are truly, incredibly good at shifting blame for their screw-ups. And here, I thought they couldn’t make them any more douchebags!

More thoughts about this scene. I have no idea if Dean feels guilty for it (Dean’s guilty complex is pretty epic) but in general I’d say he accuses the hit anyway. Back at the start of the season he expressed the view that he ruins everything he touches (I think it was the episode with Osiris) and later in this one he says that ‘caring breaks angels’ obviously referring to Cas. And he definitely made Cas care about humans, those same humans that Cas loved because they were his Father’s creations and that his superiors, Zacariah and Michael, ignored or simply saw as pawn, to carry on their family slap-fest.

Now, don’t get me wrong. Cas’s choices were his own: since 4.22 when he decided to side with the Winchesters and stop Armageddon, nobody put a gun to his head and forced him to do it, it was his free choice (and I think Cas, too, should do better to remember that instead of being passive-aggressive about it with his constant ‘I died for you’ or ‘I bled for you’), but I can also see how Dean may feel guilty about a whole lot of things with regard to Cas.

ARGH! This episode was so layered and intense. I need to watch it more times to really appreciate what Edlund did with the characterizations, especially of Dean. ♥!!!
